Thanksgiving Blog

Nate!By Dr. Lisa Goodman, DC

Thanksgiving marks the end of a very eventful month in the Goodman household.  We celebrate the birthday of both of our sons, Tommy 4 & Nate 1.  We also celebrate my birthday.  This is a great time of year to reflect on how much has changed in a year and what we have to look forward to.  As I look back on the year I can’t help but be grateful and thankful for the many people in my life who make our practice my second home.  I started the practice over five years ago and we have been through many positive and wonderful transitions as we have grown.  Today, I feel thankful for the creativity, humor and knowledge of our staff and providers.  We are so lucky to have a positive impact on our patient’s lives every day – but even more lucky to have fun doing it.  I really depend on Jenny & Sylvia to keep the practice running smoothly and am thankful for everything they do every day.  I am fortunate to collaborate with Dr. Kati, Ashley and Amanda to find solutions for our patients.  As we say goodbye to Dr. Jake we wish him well and are grateful that we were able to work with him.

Today I am thankful for the people who have ever been or currently are patients in our practice.  Our patients challenge and inspire me to think differently about chiropractic care.  They make me want to continue learning and never settle for what I already know.

On a personal note, today I am thankful for a wonderful, supportive husband and two gorgeous, healthy boys.  I am thankful that Tommy tried and liked turkey tonight and that Nate crawled up the stairs for the first time today.

As for what is next, I am thankful for optimism and perspective.

Blog Update: Sciatica – Causes and Solutions

By: Dr. Jake Simpson, DC

Sciatica is not an actual diagnosis but rather an underlying symptom of your problem.  True sciatica refers to sharp, shooting pain starting at your low back and going down your leg.  It is also one of the most common symptoms from patients in a chiropractic office.  Below are some of the most common causes of sciatica as well as some solutions to eliminate it.

A chiropractor will start by assessing several culprits of the symptom sciatica.  These culprits include but are not limited to:

• Herniated disc problems

• Spinal stenosis (narrowing)

• Facet joint problems

• Nerve entrapment/Piriformis Syndrome

• Presence of tumors, infection or metabolic complications

In most cases a chiropractor will evaluate and rule out sciatica caused by a bulging or herniated disc first.  Disc problems can (although more rare) lead Read the rest of this entry →

Blog Update: Gardening With A Healthy Back

By: Dr. Lisa Goodman, DC

One of the best parts of summer is spending time making your yard beautiful.  Of course we all know that this can be physically demanding.  Every week in our practice we treat new patients who have a ‘gardening injury’.  Here are a few tips for preventing the most common injuries:

  1. Weeding: Plan ahead.  Many people spot a rogue weed with the plan to pull just that one. . .and then it turns into a few hours of getting every last weed.  By planning ahead you can avoid terrible Read the rest of this entry →

Dr. Goodman’s Favorite Things:

Cal/Mg Supplement

“One of my favorite things is Cal/Mag Supplement by Biogenesis.  Most people know calcium is good for your bones (& Magnesium helps with absorption of Calcium).  But often overlooked is that calcium is necessary for your muscles.  Muscles work efficiently when they have a good balance Read the rest of this entry →

Blog Update: Rib Fixations

By: Dr. Lisa Goodman, DC

That Knot in your Back might be a Rib Fixation.

Each day I inform many patients that the ‘knot’ they have been feeling in their upper back right near the shoulder blade might actually be a rib.  The reaction I get most often is of surprise.  “How can a rib do that?”  Many of us picture our rib cage to wrap around the front of our body, but that rib cage also attaches to the spine in the back.  The joint between the rib and the vertebrae can become stuck or misaligned which is called a fixation.  Symptoms of a rib fixation include pain between Read the rest of this entry →

Chiropractors are Dancing with the Stars

This article was written back when Emmit Smith was still dancin, but I thought it was fun :)

There is no denying it, America loves ABC television’s “Dancing With The Stars.”

The ABC smash dance show continues to deliver the goods. Anyone who has watched the show can see that these dancers are under a great amount of physical as well as emotional stress.

Show coordinators for “Dancing With The Stars” were in urgent need of a chiropractor. They did what other local network studios are doing more frequently, they researched and called a good chiropractor. The doctor they found left his West Los Angeles office in midafternoon and headed over to Beverly Hills where the show was about to be broadcast live. The chiropractor arrived just in time to assist the dancers in need, and shared in everyone’s positive attitude that the show must go on.

The World Cup and Chiropractic

by: Jocelyn Leidenfrost

As an avid soccer fan, I have been enjoying the games of the 2010 World Cup.  After playing soccer for eight years, I know all of the injuries and pains that these athletes can suffer from training, practice, and games.  It made me wonder which of my favorite players utilize chiropractic care and what they had to say about it.  After a bit of research, I found that not only do many soccer players have a team chiropractic physician, but adjustments are many times a part of their game-day routine!  In fact, one of my favorite US soccer players, Landon Donovan, said that he enjoys chiropractic treatment before games to maximize his performance and recommends chiropractic care to anyone wanting to get the most out of their workouts and feel their best.  Who could blame them for wanting for feel their best? I bet our doctors at Washington Park Chiropractic would love to treat Donavon whenever he is in Denver!
