Music Soothes the Soul

By: Jocelyn Leidenfrost

I have been lucky enough to have seen six Red Rocks shows of my favorite bands this summer and plan on saving up to see a couple more!  Red Rocks season has always put a hop in my step.

What could be better than listening to your favorite music AND being outdoors at the same time (other than winning a free trip to Alaska or paradise)?  Red Rocks is amazing and beautiful but there are many outdoor venues to check out this summer such as City Park Jazz on Sundays, and the Denver Botanic Gardens concert series.  It may be nearing the end of the summer but it is never too late to enjoy some outdoor music with your friends and family.

Need more convincing? Listening to music is actually healthy for you!  Music can change your mood, relieve stress, calm you down, or help get over a recent break up/fight.

Namaste…The Benefits of Yoga

By: Jocelyn Leidenfrost

I was lucky enough to have decent financial support from my parents through high school and college, but once I graduated DU and entered the ‘real world’ I was cut off and on my own.  There are many things that I chose to give up to be financially responsible but one thing that I refused to give up were my yoga classes.  Luckily my studio offers free, unlimited yoga for trade so I began to clean my studio for two hours a week in order to keep up with my practice.  I began practicing yoga about four years ago at the Ritchie center and switched over to a local studio so that I could try Hot Yoga and also practice more frequently.  I have fallen in love with it ever since and absolutely believe in all of the benefits it brings to your life.  In case you are looking for anything to spice up your workout routine, consider starting yoga.  If you are interested, I will let you in on what I like most about yoga…

A thought to share
She wrote……………..    I just finished taking an evening class at Stanford. The last lecture was on the mind-body connection–the relationship between stress and disease.  The speaker (head of psychiatry at Stanford) said, among other things, that one of the best things that a man could do for his health is to be married to a woman. Whereas for a woman, one of the best things she could do for her health was to nurture her relationships with her girlfriends. At first everyone laughed, but he was serious.

Is Unemployment Stressing You Out?

By: Cinta Porter, LCSW

You are not alone, especially these days. Most people will deal with unemployment at least once in their lives.  The important thing is to remember that this too will pass.  It is a temporary glitch in your life.  Keep a positive attitude and maintain a strong self image through this transition from loss of a job to looking in new directions.  Try repeating positive affirmations.  Research has shown that even if you do not necessarily believe the affirmation, the act of repeating them, imbeds in your brain, and you eventually accept the positive thought.  For instance, if you say to yourself “I am very hirable” over and over, research says that when you go to your next interview, your self esteem will have improved and you may have a more positive experience.   Remind yourself of past successes.  You’ve had plenty of them  before and will have them again!
