Chiropractic: A Broad Spectrum Profession

By: Dr. Jake Simpson, DC

So often in my practice I have patients come in with a comment more or less like this, “I went to this one chiropractor and he did this ______, you’re not like him/her are you?”  Now, whatever you or someone else puts in that blank is totally subjective, but the fact is, the chiropractic profession is very broad in its specialties, practices and/or philosophies.  In general, there is not going to be one chiropractor that practices the exact same as another.  There are countless techniques, many specialties, and even more philosophical beliefs from one chiropractor to the next.  This can be, and understandably so, confusing to some, but this is the case with all professions.  It is our responsibility as patients or consumers to find what is most comfortable with us as individuals and that will ultimately lead to a better end outcome.  In an attempt to be politically correct and in an attempt to not offend other chiropractors, I will give you my opinion on the topic.

My Life with Scoliosis: The Importance of Early Detection

By Jocelyn Leidenfrost

It is incredibly important to take care of your back.  This may be an obvious statement to anyone reading this blog on the Washington Park Chiropractic website, however, many people take their healthy spines for granted and as a result may suffer injuries later in life.  As for me, I have been taking extremely good care of my back since I was diagnosed with scoliosis in the 6th grade.  For about four years I wore a back brace almost all day and night to prevent further curvature.  I would take my brace off for several hours a day while I was at my dance studio, in gym class, or running around at soccer games or practices.  After I would outgrow a back-brace I would get ‘molded’ for a new one; I was told this was similar to getting a cast even though I have never broken a bone on my body other than a finger (knock on wood)!   I would also do exercises every night or day to strengthen my back and take hot baths before bed to relax my muscles.  My mother was always by my side and I still fondly remember our visits to my orthopedic doctor who always told me that I could still do anything in the world that I wanted to, as long as it was legal.

Screenings at Washington Park Chiropractic

For anyone reading this with children, I think it is absolutely crucial to have your kids get yearly scoliosis screenings. In my case, my middle school offered free screenings but it wasn’t until my pediatrician did a scoliosis check that I found out.   Dr. Goodman has found scoliosis in several children over the last few years (when their pediatrician missed it!)  Regular check-ups with our doctors will ensure that your child’s spine is cared for early on.  About 7 million people in the United States are affected by scoliosis and surgery can possibly be avoided if caught soon enough.

Did you Know?

Technologies Impact on Your Spinal Health

By Dr. Jake Simpson, DC

One of the most common ailments Dr. Goodman and I treat daily can be directly related to your common, everyday technological devices.  Sounds crazy, right?  Well let us be honest…You are not going to tear a rotator cuff, break an elbow or blow out a knee texting on your phone, typing at your computer or watching television.  The injuries you can sustain texting, typing or watching television can be very debilitating, and very harmful to your overall health and not to mention, quite painful.

Due to the significant growth in the usage of technological devices, chiropractors are starting to see a significant growth in stressful and repetitive conditions directly related to poor posture.  The most commonly seen postural abnormality is known as anterior or forward head posture and rolled shoulders.  Let’s think about what is causing this common postural abnormality.  If you just look around you see people looking down texting on mobile devices, hours staring at computer screen at work, slouched on the couch watching the television…. The list is endless.
