Wellness Family: Back to School!

It’s common knowledge that the school cafeteria has become just another franchise; foods aren’t healthy and well-balanced. Vending machines offer chips, cookies, sodas and all kinds of other junk foods that children shouldn’t be eating. This creates a challenge to parents that many have decided to ignore.

Accepting that it’s a lost cause many parents have rationalized that the rest of their children’s meals are healthy and nutritious so they can be lax regarding lunch. This is a misconception, considering what is being served in the majority of school cafeterias.

Technologies Impact on Your Spinal Health

By Dr. Jake Simpson, DC

One of the most common ailments Dr. Goodman and I treat daily can be directly related to your common, everyday technological devices.  Sounds crazy, right?  Well let us be honest…You are not going to tear a rotator cuff, break an elbow or blow out a knee texting on your phone, typing at your computer or watching television.  The injuries you can sustain texting, typing or watching television can be very debilitating, and very harmful to your overall health and not to mention, quite painful.

Due to the significant growth in the usage of technological devices, chiropractors are starting to see a significant growth in stressful and repetitive conditions directly related to poor posture.  The most commonly seen postural abnormality is known as anterior or forward head posture and rolled shoulders.  Let’s think about what is causing this common postural abnormality.  If you just look around you see people looking down texting on mobile devices, hours staring at computer screen at work, slouched on the couch watching the television…. The list is endless.

Static vs. Movement

Advances in sports injury care with the Graston Technique

By: Dr. Lisa Goodman, DC, CCSP

The Graston Technique is used daily in my office to treat sports injuries, muscle and ligament pain and repetative stress injuries.  Over the last few years as advances in training and technology continue, I have improved my education and continue to develop my technique.  A recent study confirms the results I have been seeing in my office.

Clinical Experience: As a level 3 certified Graston Technique practitioner, I have had years of experience with static and motion treatment.  I have found a significant increase in pain relief, range of motion and function when I implement motion and weight bearing to Graston treatments.  Using motion and weightbearing are one benefit that make Graston treatments unique to any other type of myofascial release.  You would certainly find it difficult to treat tennis elbow while doing a push-up with massage or myofascial release, but with Graston I can have a patient doing a push-up on the floor while treating them.  This positional treatment can sigificantly speed results.  Often patients see dramatic results in fewer than 6 treatments!  See the study details below.

“But I Love to Sleep on my Stomach”. . .

I hear this nearly daily from patients.  Yes, for some reason stomach sleeping is oh-so-tempting.  But if you really examine full night of sleep you would likely find that falling asleep on your stomach does not equal a restful night’s sleep.  For Dr. Jake and myself, one of the most challenging aspects of patient communication is the ‘sleep talk’.  Sleep Posture is very important so here are a few quick tips on how and why to change or modify the way you sleep.

Perfecting your sleep posture will accomplish three things: 1. Create more restful sleep  2. Reduce or eliminate back pain  3. Prevent deterioration of spinal joints and muscles.  Oh, and one added benefit can be seen in your wallet – fewer trips to the chiropractor!  So what is the perfect sleep posture?
