Blog Update: Cleansing – What? Why? How?

By: Rachel Gerlach, CNT at NutritionWorks

What is Body Cleansing?

Body cleansing has become essential in today’s modern society. An increase in environmental toxicity coupled with unhealthy diets and sedentary lifestyles has resulted in a drastic increase in illness and physical complaints such as headaches, fatigue and general feelings of “un-wellness”.

We expose our bodies to a tremendous amount of toxins via the food we eat, the water we drink, and the polluted environment that we live in and eventually our bodies reach a point where they can no longer cope without a little help.

While our bodies have a miraculous and natural ability to expel these toxins, it helps to partake in a natural detoxification once in a while to get rid of the backlog of pollutants that build up in our system over time.

A body cleanse or body detox is also a great way to give your body a boost after a night of over-indulgence, eating all the wrong foods and consuming more alcohol than is healthy. Similarly a detox after Read the rest of this entry →

Blog Update: Pediatricians “Firing” Families Over Vaccinations

Pediatricians fed up with parents who refuse to vaccinate their children out of concern it can cause autism or other problems increasingly are “firing” such families from their practices, raising questions about a doctor’s responsibility to these patients.

Medical associations don’t recommend such patient bans, but the practice appears to be growing, according to vaccine researchers.

In a study of Connecticut pediatricians published last year, some 30 percent of 133 doctors said they had asked a family to leave their practice for vaccine refusal, and a recent survey of 909 Midwestern pediatricians found that 21 percent reported discharging families for the same reason.

By comparison, in 2001 and 2006 about six percent of physicians said they “routinely” stopped working with families due to parents’ continued vaccine refusal and 16 percent “sometimes” dismissed them, according to surveys conducted then by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

According to the NVIC, today, our children are being given three times as many vaccinations as they got in the early 1980’s and that means more profit for the drug companies and the doctors selling the vaccines.

Blog Update: Foam Roller Tips and Tricks – Class on April 11!

By: Dr. Kati Schwabe, DC

You’ve all seen them…those large cylindrical foam pieces lying around the gym.  They range from 12 to 36 inches long and are about 6 inches in diameter.   Sometimes they’re even cut in half so that they have one flat edge.

Foam rolling has been around for quite awhile in the realm of Physical Therapists, Chiropractors, Athletic Trainers, and professional athletics and now we’re starting to see them much more often in the general population.

Types of foam rollers:  vary in cost, comfort and durability
Soft white foam is great for beginners, injuries, and sensitive tissues.
Graduate to a more dense foam.  It will typically last a bit longer than the softer rollers
Try a knobby foam roller for more specific trigger point work.  Be careful with these, however, as you can easily overdo it if you’re a bit too aggressive.

The technical stuff:  Foam rolling is more than just stretching.
It’s self-myofascial release and it works by something called autogenic inhibition.  Our tendons, which attach muscle to bone, have nerve endings Read the rest of this entry →
