Back to School Part 3 – Healthy Habits

By: Dr. Lisa Goodman, DC

We all know that habits are easy to develop and hard to break.  This time of year is a great time to check up on your kid’s habits.  Focus on creating new good habits and breaking some rituals that might be causing harm to our children.

  1. Backpacks.  Kids carrying backpacks are at risk for developing unnatural, weak postural adaptations such as forward head carriage and ‘slouching’ shoulders.  Backpacks are also a leading cause of neck pain, headaches and injury.  Experts recommend that kids carry less than 10% of their bodyweight in a backpack.  For a 50lb third grader that should be 5lbs or less.  Studies show that many kids are carrying upwards of 20lbs in their backpack.
  2. Food.  There are several foods/ingredients that should be avoided or removed from your child’s regular diet.  Many of these foods are simply wasted calories and others can lead to serious health concerns when Read the rest of this entry →

Blog Update: Back to School Part 2 – Backpack Recommendations

Backpack Wearing Tips:

  1. Wear a properly sized and fitted backpack on both shoulders evenly.  If it has a waist belt it should be secured just below the hip bones on top of the trochanters. Read the rest of this entry →

Blog Update: Prenatal Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care is becoming an important part of birth preparation.  Women
are recognizing the benefits of regular chiropractic adjustments as they prepare for safer, easier birthing for both themselves and their babies.

Chiropractors have been caring for pregnant women for many years, but recently, with the increased interest in natural birthing, and in an effort to avoid having a c-section, a growing number of mothers have incorporated chiropractic into their prenatal care.

Prenatal chiropractic care is important for many reasons.  First, during pregnancy, increased levels of relaxin and elastin can have an effect on the Read the rest of this entry →

Blog Update: Way to go, Colorado!

By: Jenny Wetzel, Office Manager

According to the Trust for America’s Health, Colorado is still the country’s least obese state!  Yay for us!  Our percentage of obese adults has increased from 10.7 percent in 1995 to 19.8 percent in 2011, but we can still be proud of ourselves, don’t you think?

So, what keeps Coloradans in tip top shape as compared to the rest of the country?  First of all, our beautiful state attracts healthy adults who want to enjoy the outdoor lifestyle we have to offer.  Also, rec centers, bike paths and Read the rest of this entry →

Blog Update: Breastfeeding & Diet

By: Dr. Lisa Goodman, DC

We have all heard the saying “You Are What You Eat.”  Well, if you are breastfeeding there is another spin on it.  “Your Baby is What YOU Eat too!”  If you are a nursing mom you know all to well that it takes some getting used to.  Once you have the nursing part established there is still one more thing to consider: What are you eating?

As an anecdote, I recently discovered that the cause of my little Nate’s virtually continuous spitting up was my consumption of dairy.  Yes, milk, Read the rest of this entry →

Blog Update: Full-Term Pregnancy

By: Lisa Bullis, L.Ac.

For years the medical community has been telling us that 37 weeks of pregnancy is “technically” full-term.  When I was pregnant with my first baby I remember my midwives telling me “just make it to 37weeks and then you can deliver with us”; only to realize at 40+ weeks in the blazing August heat that I had been in no ‘danger’ of delivering early.

An article was just printed in the New York Times essentially stating, “if the pregnancy is uncomplicated babies should not be delivered before 39 weeks.”  They have ‘realized’ that there are significant health benefits for gestation to go to at least 39 weeks.  Babies who are delivered before 37 weeks are twice as likely to die before their first birthday than babies delivered after 39 weeks.  That is a startling statistic!

My hope is that with this groundbreaking information the medical community will think twice before inducing labor at 38 weeks because mom Read the rest of this entry →

Blog Update: Why I Chose A Home Birth

Childbirth is a very personal experience for every mother.  My only hope would be that women are educated about their childbirth options instead of having them limited because of an overzealous medical association.  After having two healthy babies with midwives I know that they are a safe option for thousands of woman who have healthy pregnancies.  For those with complications we are forever thankful for modern medical technology.  I believe that the following article articulates these sentiments beautifully.

After 12 hours of labor, my son was almost here.

“I can do this!” I shouted. “You are doing it,” the nurses sang back. I reached down to feel his head and, with one final push, out he came into my arms and onto my bed. At home. On purpose.

“You hired two midwives, and they had you catch the baby yourself? You should get your money back,” one friend joked later.

But the truth is no amount of money could have bought what I received that day: an empowering birth that respected me and my baby. Read the rest of this entry →
